What counts as proof of onward travel for UAE

  • Confirmed return flight ticket
  • Confirmed onward flight to another country
  • Increasingly paired with proof of accommodation — a hotel booking or a host letter with Emirates ID

Do you need a return ticket for the UAE?

Yes. As of 2026 the UAE has tightened entry rules, and open-ended or one-way tickets are no longer accepted for standard tourists. Visit-visa and tourist-visa holders must be able to show proof of departure from the UAE. A confirmed return or onward ticket is now effectively mandatory to board a UAE-bound flight.

Your flight must leave within your visa validity

The UAE is strict on timing: your return or onward flight must depart on or before the last day of your visa validity. A 30-day visa valid until the 31st means your departure should be on or before the 31st. Since the 10-day grace period was removed in April 2026, an overstay now triggers an automatic AED 50 (about USD 14) per-day fine immediately.

Application vs. entry

A confirmed return ticket is not always a mandatory document at the visa-application stage — many travelers submit a provisional flight reservation for their visa file instead of buying a full ticket upfront. But for boarding and entry, the onward ticket is checked. Immigration officers now also frequently ask for proof of accommodation alongside it.

UAE onward ticket — frequently asked questions

Can I enter the UAE on a one-way ticket?

No. As of 2026 one-way and open-ended tickets are not accepted for standard tourists. Airlines will deny boarding, and UAE immigration can refuse entry without proof of onward travel.

Does the return flight date matter?

Yes. Your return or onward flight must depart on or before the last day of your visa validity. The UAE removed its 10-day grace period in April 2026, so overstays are fined immediately.

Do I need a return ticket to apply for a UAE visa?

Not always at the application stage — a provisional flight reservation is often accepted for the visa file. But you do need a confirmed onward ticket to board your flight and enter.

What else do UAE immigration officers ask for?

Beyond a return ticket, officers increasingly request proof of accommodation — a hotel booking, or a letter from a host that includes their Emirates ID and address.
