Do you need a return ticket for South Korea?

Yes. A return or onward ticket is part of South Korea's entry requirements. Even travelers who are exempt from the K-ETA — and even those who hold an approved K-ETA — must still be able to show proof of onward travel. The K-ETA authorises your trip; it does not replace the onward-ticket requirement.

Airlines run Timatic checks at boarding

The decisive checkpoint is the airline desk. Carriers run Timatic checks before boarding and can refuse to issue a boarding pass if you cannot show a confirmed return or onward reservation. Because the airline bears the cost of a refused passenger, this is checked consistently.

The new e-Arrival Card (from January 2026)

Separately from the onward-ticket rule, from 1 January 2026 every foreign traveller entering Korea — including K-ETA-exempt nationalities — must submit a free e-Arrival Card online within 72 hours before arrival. It replaces the paper arrival card and does not affect the onward-travel requirement, which still stands.
