Canada: Onward Ticket & Return Flight Requirements

- βConfirmed onward flight to another country
- βShown alongside proof of funds and ties to your home country
Do you need a return ticket to enter Canada?
Not as an absolute, strict requirement β but it matters. A return ticket is not legally compulsory, yet a Canada Border Services Agency officer must be convinced you will leave at the end of your authorised stay. Proof of onward or return travel is one of the main things that convinces them.
The eTA does not guarantee entry
An Electronic Travel Authorization lets you board a flight to Canada, but it does not guarantee entry. On arrival, a CBSA officer reviews your passport and documents and decides. You must satisfy the officer that you can support yourself, have ties to your home country, and intend to leave.
A return ticket makes it far easier
While you can in principle enter without a return ticket β by showing funds, home-country ties and the means to buy one β it is much harder. Travelling with a confirmed return or onward ticket removes the most common point of friction at the Canadian border.

Is a return ticket compulsory to enter Canada?
Not strictly compulsory, but a CBSA officer must be satisfied you will leave. Proof of onward or return travel is routinely checked and makes entry much smoother.
Does a Canada eTA guarantee I can enter?
No. An eTA lets you board a flight to Canada, but a border officer decides entry on arrival based on your documents, funds and ties to home.
Can I enter Canada on a one-way ticket?
It is possible but harder β you would need to convince the officer with proof of funds and strong home-country ties. A return or onward ticket is the simplest evidence.
What if I don't know my exact return date?
A verifiable flight reservation gives you a real onward ticket to show CBSA, demonstrating intent to leave without locking in a fixed return flight.
